OUR NEW PROJECT - - THE WILLOW TREE SHADE GARDEN

Well on Saturday my husband and daughter helped me start on my new garden area!  This area is a shaded area under the huge weeping willow on our property!

It was very hot and humid outside and we had a few heavy downpours during the building time, but they were troopers and hung in there for me!

The structure part of my new garden area is a double-pen rabbit hutch!  The bunnies will be pets for us, as well as a "production center" of rabbit manure for my gardens!

This is the finished part of my husband's work!  He did such a great job!  I am so excited, now I can begin work on my new shade garden which will be focused around the hutch!  I plan on having a nice sitting area and will add some stones, a walkway, and some neat shade perennials.  If anyone has any ideas on some good shade perennials, I would appreciate any help in deciding what to plant in my new area!!

We went to a local rabbit breeder in our area who has a really great facility!  They knew a lot about rabbits and really helped us out a lot!  Then the really hard part came, picking which two we wanted!  They were all so cute!!  My daughter was a big help in this part, as she helped me to decide which ones to get!

I will be posting further pictures of my new area, as I complete it!  Any ideas on good flowering or non-flowering shade perennials would be greatly appreciated!
HAPPY GARDENING! Mindy

  1. Looks like it will be a very nice place to sit and relax! What cute bunnies! My daughter has one and he is just the sweetest guy ever. He's so friendly. I know we're in different zones, but I have good luck with Hellebores, Epimedium, Hostas, Columbines and Pulmonaria in my shady areas under big trees. Can't wait to see what you plant there.

  2. Your husband sounds like a gem! You've got some lovely photographs on your site. I particularly like the butterfly images. Yours tend to be more exotic than the butterflies over here.

  5. Oreo and Daisy are adorable! We have some shade gardens and since my hsb is a hostaholic, that's the main thing there. But there are others you could try: epimedium, lamium, toad lily. Enjoy designing your new bed and relaxation area!

  6. Looks great! The bunnies are cute! When I was a kid I had quiet a few rabbits! It was a blast! Great amount of rabbit manure I had to clean.. I on the other hand, had no place to shovel it.. lol. What about gardenias? Would they be suitable?
great luck can't wait to see the finished area.

  8. I have raccoons in my yard as well. I thought I had one. Then I saw two. Then one night I saw one of the raccoons out front. She sat there for quite a while. I came back out about ten minutes later, and there were three small raccoons with her. It looks like we have a whole family living in or near the hedge in the back yard. Destructive, but oh so cute!!
